Classic car tours in Havana. Hard top or convertible?

Are you one of those hooked by the idea of having an old American car tour by the streets of Havana? I´m going to tell you some words about it NOW!
Why such a popularity? Havana was once a hub for the Spanish empire and later, the largest market of American goods in the Caribbean. Literary speaking everything was imported from the States except sugar! Ernest Hemingway, Nat King Cole, Errol Flynn, Meyers Lansky, even Luciano and Sinatra were once regulars in the Capital of the Caribbean. Plus many American tourists!
A legit way to make money
Sixty years has passed since then. Stories, memories are just left overs of those days. The tourist industry is booming (4 million travelers) in Cuba and so a new business. The classic car tours!
Locals have taken it seriously. And it is, indeed, a profitable business which is part of the present business scenario of Havana. Many of these old cars are used as taxis in Cuba. And represent a very important solution or contribution to the transportation situation in the island. But those ones are not the so called vintage cars! They charge a way much less and are best known as ALMENDRONES (TERM USED BY LOCALS TO NAME SHARED OR COLLECTIVE TAXIS IN HAVANA)
Today, every visitor to this Caribbean city is considered a potential client. Therefore, there are lots of providers. They can be found everywhere in town as well as promoters that make a fair commission for booking a vintage car tour.
Convertible or… Consider!
There is something we must seriously consider when having a tour in an old convertible car in Cuba and that is the UVR´s influence. When booking a classic car tour the sun exposition is an element to take into consideration. Not only for your health and wellbeing, but also for the development of the tour.
I strongly believe there are a couple of things to consider when booking an old American car tour in Havana. If we really want to give value to our money and have a fantastic experience.
One is the type of car.
On a convertible car the sun exposition can be strong or very strong and why not, dangerous. Be aware of the time you choose to have the tour! From my experience, best hours are from 8 or 8:30 am on and from 4:30 or 5 pm on. I recommend no more than two hoursEvenings are best time for this kind of tours in convertible car.
Notice that always a hat is needed and sun protection.
In hard top cars you can make it at any time of the day. It is comfortable and pleasant as long as they have air conditioner which must of them have. Even you can use them to go on excursions out of Havana!

Another element to consider is cost.
Convertibles are highly demanded, so their cost is usually higher.
Hard top cars are less on demand. Cost is less.
Notice that the old American cars are driven by their drivers which are fully licensed by the Cubans authorities. Travelers are not allow to drive old American cars in Cuba. Tours are charged per hour most of the time. These cars can take five passengers maximum and have no seat belts which in Cuba is legal for this kind of cars!
If you happen to drop by Havana, book a classic car tour and do it your way!
